OCAT PEPPER SPRAY

SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER 

FIRST AID, CPR, & AED 

EXPANDABLE
BATON

Through this course, security officers will gain a basic awareness of potential issues that may affect responsibilities within the purview of their employment. It will improve observation, detection and reporting skills while enhancing coordination capability with emergency response professionals.  Officers attending the Special Police Officer Certification Course will receive additional instruction and practical demonstrations for detention and arrest of suspects, proper use of handcuffs, use of force and deployment of approved weapons.

SPECIAL POLICE OFFICER

A Special Police Officer (SPO) is granted authority by the State to arrest individuals who trespass or commit criminal offenses on premises designed in their commission. Since an SPO may exercise powers similar to those of a police officer, it is imperative that the SPO understands the legal parameters surrounding the scope of their authority and responsibilities.

 

Effective October 2020, Maryland House Bill 1111 requires all SPO’s to complete an initial 80- hour Initial Training Program, including 61 mandated training objectives.  Participants will learn the following key topics: 

  • Constitutional and Criminal Law 

  • Arrest and Court Procedures  

  • De-escalation Techniques 

  • Note-taking and Report Writing   

  • Active Shooter 

  • First Aid/CPR

  • Officer Safety and other essential topics

Anchor 2

EXPANDABLE BATON

Participants learn the basic techniques in the deployment of an expandable baton, to include:   Stance, Patterns of Movement, Baton Grip, Methods of Baton Carry, Baton Draws, Baton Two-Handed Grip Blocks, Baton Counter Strikes, and Baton Retention.  Upon completion of the course, students will understand factors to consider when assessing whether to deploy an expandable baton and the proper use of force procedures.

OCAT PEPPER SPRAY

Participants will learn basic concepts such as drawing techniques, spraying techniques, disengagement, proper defensive positions, methods of movement, multiple opponent defense, contact and cover system, and defense against moving attacks.  Upon completion of the course students will understand the effects of Oleoresin Capsicum (OCAT), identify factors justifying OCAT use, post exposure cleansing procedures, and proper documentation for use of force.

FIRST AID, CPR, & AED

This course of instruction teaches participants critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency until emergency medical services arrive.  This training prepares participants to recognize first aid emergencies such as a heart attack, respiratory distress, stroke, sudden illnesses, bleeding, as well as heat and cold emergencies, and lastly how to respond to victims suffering from a medical emergency.
